TUFTED WOOD

CLIENT: TUG STUDIO
DATE: 2010
DETAILS: DESIGN DEVELOPMENT, PROTOTYPING, FABRICATION
PHOTOGRAPHY: ALISON GOOTEE

This was a two part project. The first was thirteen lineal feet of solid wood wainscoting and, second, doors and drawer faces for a desk and storage unit. The project was born out of a milling technique the client saw while visiting our shop for another project.

Milling textile patterns and soft textures in hardwood is part of our ongoing research in ornament and surface decoration. In this example, we took a very classic and recognizable leather upholstery technique and applied it to American Walnut. The effect is eye-catching and unexpected.

WYOMING WALL

CLIENT: LTL ARCHITECTS / UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING
DATE: 2010
DETAILS: MODELING, DESIGN DEVELOPMENT, FABRICATION
PHOTOGRAPHY: MICHAEL MORAN

We produced a double-height wall-mounted topographic model of the state of Wyoming for the University of Wyoming Sullivan Student Center. “We think it’s one of the largest topographic models out there,” says the project’s architect, Paul Lewis. “It takes something familiar and presents it in an unfamiliar way. At first, you’re not sure exactly what you’re seeing.” That’s partly because the scale of the 1,000 square foot model is so large, covering an entire 35 foot atrium wall. The feature wall can be viewed from both the ground floor and mezzanine study lounges, providing a unique experience from every vantage point.

Milled out of high-grade MDF, the depth of the relief is as great as 12 inches in more mountainous terrain and as thin as 3 inches in the eastern plains. (The tallest peaks are hollowed out from behind to reduce weight on the wall.) Because of the way the model is orientated on the wall, skylights in the ceiling wash sunlight across the topography the same way sunlight falls across Wyoming’s actual mountains and plains.

The feature wall panels measure approximately 4’ x 8’ and weigh between 150 and 400 pounds. Fabricating the panels was a multistep process of machining rough contours, aligning layers, gluing, surface milling, applying fire retardant, and finishing with a high build base coat. Each of the panels were crated with precision and shipped to Wyoming to be installed by the University’s local contractor.

THE GHOSTS: ART SCREENS

CLIENT: SUE DE BEER
DATE: 2011
DETAILS: FINE ART DESIGN DEVELOPMENT & FABRICATION
EXHIBITED: PARK AVENUE ARMORY, NY
PHOTOGRAPHS: JAMES EWING

We fabricated and finished multiple screens for Sue de Beer’s solo art exhibition at the Armory Show in New York. The panels were milled from Baltic birch plywood and finished in high gloss and polished lacquer. Each piece was made for the physical exhibition and used for environmental effects in the artist’s video pieces, also on display at the show. For this project, digital art was supplied by the artist and we translated it into the final, three-dimensional medium.

TABLE SCRAPS

CLIENT: PHILIP LEE
DATE: 2009
DETAILS: DESIGN, FABRICATION

This dining table was made from excess shop material. Over the course of a few weeks, suitable scrap wood was set aside for the project. Once enough scrap was gathered, the pieces were glued and clamped to make a block of random wood. The block was then milled to reveal a uniquely textured surface.

STUDIO PARTITIONING SYSTEM

CLIENT: PARSONS SCHOOL OF DESIGN, NYC
DATE: 2009
DETAILS: FABRICATION

Utilizing the capabilities of nesting software and automated machining processes, over 1000 unique plywood components was rapidly fabricated for a permanent interior installation. The pieces were designed and assembled by a group of Parsons School of Design architecture students for their summer design workshop.

The assemblies ranged from partition walls with built-in coat hooks to benches to student computer carrels. A previously wide open studio floor was effectively reprogrammed with the repetitive part Baltic Birch plywood assemblies.
